Default Carbon tax on new cars?

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/new...ff592dd37d65d8

Worst government in history. Guess it'll help clear some current dealer stock.

A “CARBON tax” on cars that could push up the price of Australia’s most popular vehicles by more than $5000 has been proposed by the Turnbull Government.

The Daily Telegraph has obtained the Government’s proposal that outlines the emissions penalties that will be slapped on car distributors who fail to meet the new fuel efficiency target.

Car distributors were shocked to receive the proposed model from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development’s Vehicle Emissions Team on Monday evening, describing it as more “extreme” than any measures discussed during 18 months of consultation.

“This would be one of the most extreme efficiency standards in the world and will lead to car prices going up and motorists having fewer cars to choose from,” Australian Automobile Association chief executive officer Michael Bradley said.

Thumbs down Re: Carbon tax on new cars?

This is to keep the Greens happy as they can swing the balance in the Senate.
I thought the new cars were already Euro 5 or Euro6 compliant. Another pharked up tax!

If your desired outcome is to reduce the "carbon footprint", then the tax on fuel should achieve that already!

Yes just seen this this morning also.

Sounds like they need to re ignite the LPG industry with it being a cleaner burning fuel than both petrol and diesel.

EcoLPI Falcon is ahead of its time.

LOL. Everybody understands that there are vehicle emissions but how does it compare with Power Generation or Industry?

Just the usual government ideology at play, on the pie graph, don't hit the greatest percentage of emissions, always go for the smallest.

Are there incentives to go for greener cars?

I think this is state government also not wanting to construct new roads. This tax, if they continue to increase it, would push people onto public transport...... that we know doesn't exist!! We are screwed no matter what!!!

It's not just a problem with construction of new roads. It's modifying existing traffic flows to be more economical and educating motorists on driving carefully to speed limits.

How often do you get stopped at a set of traffic lights in peak hour because the 3 people taking up all 3 lanes in front of you do 20km/h under the speed limit. The lights are timed reasonably well in most areas for people doing the speed limit to get a straight run on the main roads (although timing could still use more work).

All of this stop start traffic contributes more to pollution than the minute savings they get in engine efficiency these days, keep cars moving and they do less damage. Make them brake and accellerate a lot and they do more damage.

The much bigger issue here is sovereign risk!!

Now they attack the auto industry.

These brain farts whether they become law or don't have a material effect on jobs. Nobody will want to invest where the government has shown a desire to change rules and taxes at the drop of a hat. To target specific industries.

From the report if this went ahead it would add 5k to the cost of a Corolla. That's a 25% tax. The elites while being chauffuered in Limo's want to fleece the motorist because they are ideologically opposed to motoring.

And apparently it will be discussed with stakeholders. I would have thought the main stakeholders are the Australian people but I seem to be wrong on that score since we don’t get a say.

Apparently won't go ahead now.

No doubt they are softening up the public for an introduction further down the track.

Looks like a classic Murdoch press beatup misleading the public once again.

What's being proposed is fuel efficiency standards for passenger cars much like CAFE in the states. It would have very little effect on the average car price, but make it more difficult for a brand to sell inefficient cars, or to put it more accurately, cars that have high fuel use figures, unless those models were offset by more efficient vehicles.

Strange that it's not already in place, I guess our local manufacturers specialising in V8 performance models would explain it though.

You know the tax will mean they hold onto cars for longer.

Just like sal sac pump primes the market this will have the opposite effect.

not sure if they still do, but this was the reason behind this joint venture between Aston Martin and Toyota
http://www.autonews.com/article/2009...o-aston-martin

having the toyota based cygnet in the line up helped to reduce their overall emissions rating.

G'day....Is this like the American Gas Guzzler Tax.? I noticed that the auto Chevy SS (Commodore) attracts a $1300 GGT but the manual doesn't .!!!
Probably different... Too late now anyway , great big chunk of ice just broke off Antarctica the twice as big as Delaware or something. Screwed now

Hey Roddy,

Maybe , but I reckon if a nuclear war breaks out cockroaches will end up as the dominant species, failing that, I figure we have a decent chance if we go electric ....

So rather than a power up with a blower, I should be contemplating a very big battery ...

As the older generation we probably won't work it out, but there are plenty of smart younger people getting familiar with the problem and I put faith in human nature ...,that things can improve ...

But Mother Nature is hellishly powerful and if she decides enough is enough, then as you suggest, we are probably screwed .... but I ain't given up yet ....

Just for you guys so you don't get too worried.

https://theconversation.com/ive-stud...e-change-80529

But back on topic, really the government doesn't need to mandate fuel efficiency as car companies are already active in that field.

Anyway I expect a lot more of special behaviour taxes in the future for our own good. A shiny new government department in 2015.

BETA’s mission is to build behavioural economics capability across the public service and drive its use in policy design by testing what works, where and in what context.

To do this, we work with our partner agencies to:

build APS capability to support greater use of behavioural economics in policy-making
provide behavioural economics expertise on a number of projects that apply and test policy, programme and administrative designs
establish links between the APS and the behavioural economics research and practitioner community, here and overseas.

I believe in the UK it's an additional tax on registration for fuel consumption figures. It even varies for manual/automatic figures. That's why they love their buzz boxes lol
