Default Something to be mighty proud about...

In our small part of the world we can sometimes miss some of the great achievements world wide. And our support of Ford is no exception.

So when an article about the most successful racing motor in the world's top racing series that just so happens to have 4 familiar letters stamped on it, I figured it was time to remind ourselves of the heritage Ford has. Some will know this, but I'm guessing, many will not (I know my die hard Holden mates have nothing more to say after raving on about Holden and V8s and I politely tell them about Ford and F1).

So here is a feel good story about being the top racing (engine) dog in the world!

The DFV is an internal combustion engine that was originally produced by Cosworth for Formula One motor racing. Named Four Valve because of the four valves per cylinder, and Double as it was a V8 development of the earlier, four-cylinder FVA (four valve type A engine), making it a Double Four Valve engine.

Cosworth-DFV, which won on its very first outing at the Dutch Grand Prix on 1967 in the hands of the late Jim Clark in the Team Lotus 49, is the most successful engine in the sport’s history to date.

Cosworth DFV most successful engine in the F1 history
Originally unveiled as a concept by Ford in 1965, the development of the power plant itself was sponsored by the “Blue Oval” to give it that competitive edge. After several wins notched up by Clark in 1967, the engine would become a mainstay in the sport, with it being supplied to the likes of McLaren and Williams, who also went on to secure titles

The engine helped 12 drivers and 10 teams to titles, but also bore success in both Formula 3000, as well as winning twice at Le Mans, with the likes of Derek Bell and Jackie Ickx.

Funny article.

I’m not understating the success of Cosworth but somewhere the success of Ferrari in Formula 1 and many other racing categories has been forgotten

I’m getting old.

It’s been 33 years since Cosworth has had a win in F1, it seems like I was listening to all those names only yesterday.

I can’t remember the last time a Holden engine won F1.

The point of the article is that the Ford Cosworth DFV motor is the most successful motor in F1.

Yes Ferrari has won more. But with multiple different motors, with multiple different configurations. The Ford DFV is one motor configuration but won more than any other single configuration from anyone else.

This is why it's a note worthy achievement.

Cosworth DFV is a legendary engine designed by late Keith Duckworth and sponsored by Ford - one of the most succesful racing engines ever. It seems these days Motorsport is not very high on marketing agenda - it is more about Facebook and Twiter .

With fittingly Tyrrell winning the last race for the DFV in 83 at the Detroit GP after Keke Rosberg took a memorable Monaco GP victory.

Tyrrell went on to race the DFV in 84 against the dominant turbos where they ran underweight but had a water injection system that they topped up with lead weights in pit stops to get to the min weight. A best result of second was marred by disqualification from the season for the ingenious system ran by the team.

AJ dominated the 80 season in a DFV powered Williams. Possibly one of the best ever GP battles took place between AJ in the underpowered DFV Vs the Renault Turbo of Prost @ Hockenhein 81 enjoy

Actually the last Ford Cosworth race win was in 2003 in a Jordan Ford in Brazil if memory serves. Not too long ago.

And the last drivers title powered by Ford was 1994 strapped to the back of one M.Schumacher.

Or any GM make... Do they even know what F1 is?

You do realise that the only thing Ford about it was the valve covers?
And they had sometimes a 10 to 2 team advantage using the DFV

Valve covers and a little bit of money...

The ratio had more to do with the DFV being cheap, competitive and obtainable unlike many of the then competition.

I admit I totally missed the point and humbly bow my head seeking forgiveness.

I was recently reading about Ferrari and its Formula 1 success and instantly thought well that can’t be right.

Next time I’ll be more attentive and as I did point out the Cosworth definitely has been very noteworthy with its success in motorsports.
