Default Ford Focus STD

Apparently a go 'fast' version of the diesel. 0-100 in 8 seconds. Waste of time?

Engine responds very well to mods, but auto gearbox can become unsettled trying to cope with the extra torque. Good fuel economy overall: 9-12L/100km city, 8L/100 country.

Good in theory, but 4000 rpm redlines, and the heavier weight over the front end making more understeer do not make a performance car.

Not sure how the VW GTD sells but if it sells well Ford should take it on. Maybe they should use a CGI block to keep the weight down rather than cast iron.

Do we drive them for life or have them removed with antibiotics?

But seriously that's a lot of punch for 2.0 diesel and in a car that size.
"136kW of power and 380Nm of torque."
It would carve the traffic up easy enough with great economy to boot.

It won't be called the STD, there have been diesel STs in Europe previously and they have been called ST TDCi or similar.

The Golf GTD sold very well in the last model and indeed currently in Europe (not sold over here now), so why not? It has the potential to sell well overseas.

I thought the condition had been changed to STI as infection is not as offensive as disease...
Still, I think I'd rather an STD than the keys to one of them.

Performance diesels will be a part of our future undoubtedly and while they won't suite everyone they will find enough followers. Typically they'll have great torque so when used in conjunction with 8 (or more) speed transmissions the relatively small rev range becomes less of an issue.

Cheers

Good on Ford for getting into this market. The Golf GTD was a solid performer with good fuel economy.
A colleague at work had one on lease and loved it.
Diesel is not what they used to be and you can thank Audi for that. Without needing to re emphasise the Audi LeMan entries, on the road just have a look at the SQ5.

I'd buy one, I love diesel stuff.

136KW though is a bit weak though, BMW does 150KW and 400nm out of 2L in the 123D.

I bet you its the same PSA engine the other Focus TDCI's have but in a higher state of tune.

Chuck the 2.7L in there out of the Territory

I was just reading about the new Merc C-Class with the 2.1L diesel hybrid. 170Kw/760Nm, 3.6L/100km. That kind of power train would be nice!

Well thanks for that! I thought it was quite a logical name choice, like Golf GTD. 'STD' has a funny ring to it though, doesn't it?

It's also an abbreviation of 'standard', which could be seen as base model-ish, but it could alternatively be seen as setting a new standard, maybe?

Either way, surely people weren't thinking of a disease? How could you?

I get your logic, just somethings that make logical sense can fail the emotion test. In this case, STD.

I agree that STD is usually Standard, but having it on the back of a car is asking for trouble!

Anyway I've said all I need. My opinion on the STD is that it probably won't sell all that well. The GTD sells because it's a Volksy, and Volksy could have every salesman defecate in every glovebox of every Golf and convince the Australian motoring public that it's an amazing free option.

Even then, you don't see that many GTD's. Ford has a lesser following than VW so if they sold it here it probably would be one of those little know orphans with about 20 sold. RenaultSport made an RS175 Megane cup with a Diesel engine, and I think the one that sold here is still getting around Melbourne with a very happy owner.

The idea is great, but diesel is just starting to catch on here in family cars, we've a ways to go before we catch onto diesel in our sports cars.

Might work in Europe where diesel is significantly cheaper but not here where it's slower and more expensive.
The diesel's torque may be an improvement over the 2.0L NA petrol, but that's more to do with the lack of the petrol's lack of power than the diesel's torque. When compared with the Ecoboost 2.0 petrol in the ST, a diesel would have nothing.

Problem is they have an average diesel engine but a real good petrol one (Ecoboost).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Du...SA_DW_Based.29

Say if it had this instead:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_R_engine

All alloy diesel engine, and pretty impressive figures for the same size engines but they are a much newer design.

Its slowly getting there, we're either going to see more development and more impressive small diesel engines, or its going to be completely dead if they give up (Emissions regulations). Its all happening at the bigger end at the moment rather than the smaller engines.

Caradvice reported yesterday that the new Golf GTD wont be offered in Australia
Ford could have a larger slice of the diesel Hot Hatch pie.

True, but how big is that pie in Australia? Must be a reason for VW pulling out.

The ongoing increase in the availability of diesel variants is a worrying trend given the amount of toxic emissions these things produce. They have significantly improved over the years with the introduction of DPF's, but they still produce very toxic emissions. Even with the DPF's, the particulate matter is now so small that it can be trapped inside the respiratory system. Just my thoughts, I don't like them, but it seems there are plenty of people out there that consider fuel economy above everything else.

I'd much prefer to see small capacity petrol/hybrid engines, which can produce very similar torque characteristics to Diesel engines.

In a way this is what I was eluding. Some here are making out the VW GTD was a good seller. In the grand scheme of things no, it was a niche within a niche.

History has proven that Ford are not willing to persist with small sales numbers / niche markets. Just look at the Focus CC convertible, Diesel and sedan Fiesta, Manual Focus sedans, Manual Focus Diesel ect ect. This is just how Ford work, they are volume company. Based on this I would understand if the Focus ST Diesel wasn't imported.
