Holden started as a saddlery business in the 1800's, then trimming then building car bodies for other companies, including bodies for Ford before their plant was built here.

So yes, technically the name has been around over 100 years.

Didn't Mike Devereux say something similar a day out from pulling the plug?

We're here to stay - we may not be making cars but were sure are making ads that annoy the ford faithful.

Very true. We had a presentation by our lease company on Thursday to inform staff about the novated leasing arrangements (my company has been taken over by Siemens). One of the questions asked was "what would the residual value of a Ford or Holden be once they have left the country"?

Defiantly a message that needs be delivered. The Falcon and Commodore will be just like any other superseded model. The fact that they are the last and will not be replaced may even hold values slightly higher for a while.

What a load of nonsense!
I've had a few people ask me why would anyone buy a Holden now (please hold the smartass comments to yourselves), if they are leaving (their concerns were about spare parts and warranty etc.), this ad is directed at those who would buy elsewhere based on those above reasons. Reassurance in the brand.

I remember someone strongly dispute that statement on here years ago, but didn't provide any real evidence though. Most cars were CKD kits assembled by local agents everywhere, so there's no reason why Holden's body building wouldn't have assembled a Ford body if they assembled all kinds of makes before GM took over in 1931.

For the last 12 months or so, holden has been talking up staying to 2024 and the like,
now they have to recant everything and convince everyone that they mean what they say...

While Ford may not be saying much, they don't have to undo any misconceptions about its departure.

"We're here to stay" is wrong on so many levels.

The new slogan should be:

"Holden 意味著大量的澳大利亞"

Holden engineering did a lot of work behind the scenes correcting problems and deficiencies with overseas designs,
Holden's imports are really going to hit the wall after 2017, that local input is vital to keeping customers..

GM's brass think Holden can ditch 50% of its sales and kill off the engineering department and cream the profits?

Insanity springs to mind.....

I dare say in the grand scheme of things GM dont care about profits down under, as long as they're not losing money. We're a minuscule market. If I was in their position I'd rather be making a profit in America, Japan, Europe and Saudi Arabia than worry about making a profit in Australia.

Ford and GM will discover the hard way as a lot of disillusioned people will no longer buy any of their products once local production ceases. They will both become bit players in Australia. One thing is certain - Toyota will be the number one brand in this country for many years to come.

I saw this, very smart move and something that Ford AU missed. The general public need to know these kind of things or they will just stop buying brand X altogether.

Social media slams Holden over ‘Here to stay’ claim

Staying power: Online communities have pilloried Holden’s Here to Stay advertising campaign.

Online community takes aim at Holden over ad campaign

23 December 2013

By BARRY PARK

SOCIAL media has reacted angrily to Holden’s assertion that it is not leaving Australia after it pulls out of making cars in 2017.

The car-maker late last week launched an advertising blitz with the slogan “We’ re here to stay”, a claim that many critics posting on Facebook and Twitter say is wrong.

“Holden has been here for over 100 years,” the advertisement, broadcast on television, radio and online, says.

“And while in the future we’ll no longer make cars in Australia, we’ll always be committed to making the best cars for Australia.

“That’s something that will never change because we’re here to stay.”

However, social media sites have slammed Holden’s claim that it will be more than just a badge once the car-maker pulls out of Australia.

As of late this morning, Holden’s Facebook page contained more than 1000 comments in response to a post about the ad – almost all of them negative.

“It's a hard sell and frankly you’re embarrassing yourself. How has any vehicle in your line-up of imported Chevy's with Holden badges been selected as ‘the best cars for Australia’?” wrote Stuart Brokenbrough.

“It's like the ‘I still want to be friends’ line after a break-up. No, no we can't,” said Bouka Senior.

Twitter was equally scathing.

“How about this question… Can you pack up and leave Australia altogether? We’d prefer it if you did,” wrote Pete Vee.

“Stop ****ing in our pockets, the Aussie-built Holdens are gone forever,” wrote Twitter user Ryan Fellowes.

Holden vehicle sales, service and marketing executive director Philip Brook said the aim of the ‘Here to Stay’ campaign was to ensure customers understood that the Holden brand would remain in Australia. “Over the next four years we have hundreds of thousands of world-class cars and engines to build locally and sell. Beyond that time, we will be offering world-class cars sourced for Australia from GM’s global network,” he said.

Holden said the sporting identities appearing in the ads, including rugby players, AFL footballers and cyclists, had volunteered their time to make the ad.

However, all have received either sponsorship or financial support from the car-maker, including access to Holden-badged vehicles.

Swinburne University marketing lecturer Stephen Downes told radio station 3AW this morning that the ad campaign was a risky one from the car-maker.

“It’s clear what their intention is,” he said. “It’s to at least maintain their sales and their presence in the market until Holden ceases manufacturing here, and I guess to correct any misapprehension that consumers might have that Holdens won’t be available in the future.

“I think the risk is for many consumers and certainly for those close to people who work at Holden in the manufacturing sector, it’s likely to just reinforce the bad news ... and to provoke counter-arguments, for example, for the idea that it’s GM in the US that is pulling the strings and Holden is no longer a local business.”

Lets face it, the ad is wasted on one eyed Ford people, evident by the typical poop slinging.

Holden are smart, they see that they will lose some of their customer base but they are trying to shore up what they have.

What did Ford do? Oh, we're closing...see ya, hate to be ya! To their adoring fans.

At least Ford is keeping R&D here. More than Holden.

Hell, you can even argue that in future Kia's will have more Australian input than Holdens since they have been investing in local tuning for Australian spec suspensions.

edit: Actually I wonder if Hyundai/Kia are interested in Lang Lang?

edit2:Holden will be outsourcing suspension tuning

Looks like Kia Australia does it in-house

Its hilarious how upset some of those people are. Its a car maker, not a person. Getting that upset over them wanting to actually make a profit is just stupid. If people actually cared this much then why didn't they buy more Aussie made cars?

Couple reasons;

The offering doesn't suit their needs.

They don't buy new so aren't capable of supporting the industry.

Holden did make some Ford bodies prior to 1925.

Adelaide News 31/3/1925
FORD ADVENT WORKS AT GEELONG
Duncan & Fraser, Limited, is the only company as far as this State is concerned that will be affected by the establishment of a Ford body building factory at Geelong. Victoria. Holden's Motor Body Builders, Limited, the largest manufacturers or bodies in Australia will not be affected, and T. J. Richards & Sons, Limited, of Keswick also state that their operations will not be interfered with. Under the old regime distributors of Ford products in each State manufactured the bodies for their respective States, and Duncan & Fraser, Limited, will continue to carry out Ford orders until the erection of the Geelong works is complete. "What we will lose by reason of the establishment of the Ford works, we will pick up in other directions," said Mr. A. W. Duncan (a director of the company today. "We do not depend solely on the making of Ford bodies by any means," he proceeded. "We will continue to make bodies for Studebaker, Standard, and Thornycroft chassis and I expect that most of the men now on Ford work exclusively will be absorbed by the company in other directions." Mr. E. W. Holden (managing director of Holden's Motor Body Builders Limited) stated that the advent of Fords to Australia would not affect his company in any way. "We have not built any Ford bodies for 12 months," said Mr. Holden. "If the whole of the Ford orders had come to us it would have meant the establishment of a special plant. At present we are working at full capacity both at King William street and Woodville. The King William street plant was designed to turn out 400 bodies a week. and is actually producing 500. The Woodville plant is also well above its estimated output." Mr. C. Richards (managing director of T. J. Richards Limited) stated that he also would not suffer on account of the establishment of the Geelong works. "I do not think the step the Ford Company is taking is a wise one," said Mr. Richards. "They will find that the heavy cost, of a highly paid executive staff will eat away the profits. I consider they would have been served better if they had allowed the Ford distributors to continue making the bodies."

Regardless of how much they advertise, its really Holden no more; its GM masquerading as Holden in Australia.

Holden was a motor body builder. Always has been, and will be, to me anyway.

The Brokenbrough family are really making a name for themselves by protesting on Facebook. From looking at his pictures, he looks almost the same as Matt Brokenbrough, who's been persistently complaining on the General Motors Facebook profile. Must be his brother.
