1st fatal accident xmas day 4 wheel drive crashes through a barrier no stronger than a swimming pool fence over elizabeth drive at liverpool. the car plummeted over the carriageway and onto another road below almost crusshing a car beneath. bad blew.any news KEEPLEFT.

I put a bit on this crash topic in the other thread -'M7's first crash.

A potential median barrier issue, as to 'sufficient strength-quality' for the speed-zone. I suspect the fence is an Australian designed and made wire-rope, and not the other International patented type-'Brifen'.

The black so decribed 'pool fence' you see in footage is placed between the two bridge overpass that form the M7's Northbound and Southbound run, this fence is appropriate and its job is purely to stop pedestrians from the roadway below from climbing up onto the M7. This fencing is used, rightly on many similar bridges, the F3 Ourimbah twin bridge overpass (white) for example - for the same effect.

Separating vehicles from this purely duty pedestrian barrier is 'median' barrier, typically wire-rope, jersey or guardrail, this pedestrian pool fence form of barrier impacted EDGE-ON is not good for vehicle safety, it has potential spear-effect not stoppable by windscreens or a motorcyclists leathers,

You see an example of this type of install on Pennant Hills road, it should be removed from that duty and replaced with vehicle standard arresting barrier, like a guardrail or wire-rope which can also do the job of preventing pedestrians from running across the road into the path of Mrs Wilsons blue Falcon. In any case, once the F3-M2 link is running major changes will be introduced on Pennant Hills Road including a lane reduction, and the route will be made more pedestrian friendly bal blah blah to please Harold blah blah blah.

I'll chase this up Tuesday.

IF the barrier is not the required standard, the family could have a case in negligence, offset by any contributory actions by the driver.

My hardline view is this should not happen, even though it involved a Landcruiser.

The Brifen portion of M4 has arrested several Semi trailer impacts without causing one of them to topple over joyously into the median scrub, since so installed several years back.

Yep definately larger but in pure monetry terms Eastlink is the most expensive. Just don't do the math on the modern day cost of the Snowy Scheme!

Not to be a stickler for facts but the Federal Government actually doesn't get any monies raised from the GST. All monies raised from the GST goes directly to the states to spend as they see fit...
