Default How do you tell the difference?

Hello everyone.

I am just wondering if anybody is able to tell me how i can tell if my 1972 Galaxie has a 390ci or a 400ci.

Cheers Dave.

If it hasn't been modified it should be the 400. Is it an Australian assembled car?

Any chance of throwing up a picture of the engine bay?

The 390 is a FE big block, which is physically a very large and wide engine. The 400 is a Cleveland derivative, and should be much narrower if I remember correctly.

Looks more like a 390 from that pic. I have photos of my Australian 72 Galaxie somewhere (but not digital ones). I'll see if I can find them.

I have attached a blurry photo of my 72 Mark IV 460 which might (or might not help)!

The 390 was used in Galaxies up to 1970.
The 400 was used in the 1971 and 1972 Galaxies.
