Default The RTA

nsw motorists wat do u think of the RTa i think they r a bunch of money hungry bastards the other day i picked up my new car they charged me $525 for stamp duty etc also wen u pay rego the motor vehicle tax is rediculas on it and also wen u wanna get custom paltes the fees are outragous even for a slightly personalised plate ur payin a fortune some ppl might call me a whinger as every1 in NSW has to do the same but wen u look at the state of some of our roads i.e( the highway that goes through our town Mate St for those that know is full of potholes) it makes u 1der wat they are spending our $$$$$$$$$$ on i go for a drive across the border Albury-Wodonga and Vic roads are fairly decent rnt the best but they r better the at home so wats the go come on RTA get ur ****in priorties in order and use some of ur taxes to fix our ****ed up pothole filled roads : is goin on
btw any other states wat are ur fees and charges like
i paid $352 to reg my AUII XR6 sedan

The cost of plates in NSW vs other states is huge. I pay $110 a year just for having custom (red) letter letter number number letter letter combo. If I wanted a full custom job it would have been like $450+ a year + rego cost. Christ !

They have to be making money on these....

I pay $400 a year for my plates (all letters), and when I bought the XR6, the transfer fee was $976 to put it into my name.
I think it's roughly 0.03% of the purchase price of the vehicle.
But if you look at the breakdown of the rego fees, it's 80% stamp duty and tax, and the actual registration fee is about $27/

i picked up my personalized plates on tuesday expecting to have to pay the $130 annual fee. they only charged my $48! I couldn't get ot of the place quick enough. It cost $50 to order, so 50 and 48 doesnt go close to 130.

And custom plates in NSW can be revoked if someone complains that they find them offensive. You do not get a refund on the remaining fee (say you pay your rego today and someone complains tomorrow - bye bye plates, AND money)

I reckon its a bit of a rip off. They are metal, some plastic afterall. It doesnt cost the RTA anything if you have them. I spose it might be the demand that someone else wants them so that justifys it.

Yeah stamp duty & Personalised Plates suck in NSW.

Get this most states don't even have anual fee's for Personalised Plates. But to get a moderately cool plate down here it costs like $200 a year.

They are totally useless too. Even their so called helpdesk.
When I bought the XR6, I went to them to get the car put in my name, and transfer the custom plates from my old car (which was in dad's name) to me, and the plates from the XR to my old car. Sounds pretty simple. Just a straight swap.
Didn't have to pay transfer fees on the plates as they were staying in the family, but they couldn't figure out how to do it.
It took 2 days, during which time BOTH cars were useless as the plates had to be put "on hold" while they sorted it out.
I got my custom plates finally (they had wanted to charge me for having them in storage though it wasn't my fault), but we had to surrender the standard plates and get new ones issued to my old car (which they made my Dad pay for).
Two days and about 6 hours standing at two RTA branches. I wasn't happy.
though my plates look awesome on the XR. :

This is because it is proportionate to the amount of time left before you have to pay rego again. I am guessing your rego will be due in another 5 or 6 months.

I had the same thing with my custom plates when I bought them.

You'll be up for $130 next rego, if they are the coloured plates. <-- this fee is called The Right to Display, you're not buying the plate, you're hiring the right to display them, according to the RTA.

All up registration cost me this year on EURO4D:
CTP Greenslip: $396.00 (under 25, that will change next year thankfully)
Registration: $47.00
Motor Vehicle Tax: $173.00
Pers. Blue Plates: $130.00
No pink slip required on new cars
Total: $746.00

I love rego time... :dr_Evil: Like a fox!

Yeah, I was thinking that some blue plates would be nice to have but I havent looked into the cost yet. I stormed out of the RTA office after waiting 2 hours for them to book an L's test, so I'll do it all online I think.

MY02CL sound ok? or MY02LR? Im getting the AB-12-CD style.

If you stick to the usual format its cheaper isnt it? Like say i live in ACT and they all start with Y followed by 2 letters-2 numbers and another letter. As far as im aware there is no cost to have them other than the cost of getting them.
