Default WTF is this? Bigpond Users Please read!

I and a few other people who use Bigpond as their ISP are getting these emails:

Sender: register@bigpond.com or mail@bigpond.com
Subject: *WARNING* Your Email Account Will Be Closed
Attachment: email-info.zip or password-info.zip

When I tried to open one my virus software stated that it had serious viral issues and refused to open it.

Anyone know what is going on?

Haven't received anything like that on my account. Wouldn't trust it anyway even if I didn't run it over a virus scanner. I'd probably make a phone call to Helldesk about it.

There is your answer!

How many times does it have to be repeated, if a mail looks suspect DONT open it, delete it!

The is a virus mail doing the rounds, the Zip file will have file inside that will look like a txt file if your windows is in Sesamese St mode and hiding the extension. The file will actually be a .exe, a .scr, or a .pif file which will load a trojan.

I sat on hold with Bigpond for ages this morning to try and find out what was wrong only to give up after being told "your call is important" too many times

What does that tell you you should do when the Bigpond contract has expires. Why do you think Bigpond are the only ones pushing long 24 month contracts.

Yeah what do you's recommend as a suitable alternative for broadband access. Unfortunately the area I live has limited access in that regard but there has to be someone suitable.

Yeah... ah, never open attatchments from emails if you dont know whats in the attatchment in the first place. It's just asking for trouble if you do.

I'd thoroughly recommend Internode, closelyu followed by IInet.

Check their sites, and look at whirlpool and see what lots of other have to say.

I can vouch for Internode when it comes to customer service having done many installation in 4 states. And regrettfully still doing many Bigpond hookups for customers I know just how frustrating, beaurocratic, and unhelpful they can be.

I agree with all those who have said not to open it. That truly is asking for trouble. As for as ISP, I can recommend Ozemail. Their phone answering skills aren't great, but I have been with them for about 10 months now and haven't had any problems. I am on an unlimited plan and it is actually unlimited. They don't throttle me back or charge extra. I download between 10 and 15 GB a month without a disconnection or any hassles. Price is pretty reasonable too. I think I pay 60 a month.
