Default The weirdest thing happened today!!!!

G'day,

Well it started as a usual morning for me, woke up at 5:30am, had a shower, had some breakfast and headed off for work at around 6:15am.

Got to the work car park at around 6:23am and parked the car in the usual spot..... Turned the ignition off, the climate control fan starts up and I begin to get out of the car. WHAT!!!! The climate control fan???? I dont ever even turn the fan on, I usually wind the windows down to get air flow, and what the hell is it doing starting up as soon as I turned the key off???? OFF!!!! not ACC, but OFF!!!! Where the hell is it getting power from???

It had me stumped, in fact it still has me stumped.
After pulling the glovebox out and disconnecting all the white plugs linked to the fan system, the bloody thing kept going!!!!! It wasnt till I located the brown plug that is connected directly to the motor that I was able to stop it!!!!

What the hell happened???

I know there could be a whole heap of reasons, but seriously, its just plain weird if you ask me!!!! And so random.

And it wasnt even blowing at full speed, it was like half speed or something, so it wasnt even getting a full 12 volts (which you would expect if it arced out somewhere)!!!!

I mean, yeah it could be the loom that I made, but I didnt touch the looms behind the dash, and I have been driving for 6 months without a problem!!!

Mike : : : : : :

Pull Glovebox out.Recirc duct far left of dash.V section to right.Metal box about 100 mm long 50 mm wide wires going to it and being held by 2 screws diagonaly this is it.Should have 2 separate connectors one has 2 wires to it joined by brown connector (probably melted) and the second conncector can't remember who many wires but these are smaller. This is Fairmount style.Standard is in the same spot but is plastic and half the size and a 4 pin connector I think goint to it.

Unlike standard air climate control on premium models doesn't use a resistor pack for the fan speed controller. What happens is that there is a transistor in a T0-3 package that sits on the firewall side of the case and which doubles as a heat sink that sits in the air inlet duct to keep it cool. The trouble is that moisture and leaves and crud collect in this duct on the transistor casing and it rusts out until it shorts.

You can get replacement transistor for less than $15 from Worldwide electronics http://members.iinet.net.au/~worcom/
The transistor in question is a Motorola 2N5686.

When you replace it buy and fit a T0-3 cover kit from Disk Smith, Altronics or Jaycar and also spray the outside of the case with electronic spray resin. Easy to replace if you can solder and desolder. Unscrew case from firewall (shiny cast alloy near glove box), take case apart, desolder transistor and solder in new one. Clean out the duct with the vac cleaner while fan speed controller is out. Make sure you note the orientation of the transistor when you remove its so you don't reverse connect the replacement.

See http://www.altronics.com.au/index.a...a=item&id=H7290 or better http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productVi...eMax=&SUBCATID= for the transistor cover. You will also need new insulation washers http://www.altronics.com.au/index.a...a=item&id=H7200 or http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productVi...eMax=&SUBCATID= and some Unick or similar thermal grease http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productVi...eMax=&SUBCATID= (as used with your TFI module)

Ghost or stuck relay/short.

Technically the first will be easier to deal with...

It will take 5 minutes to undo the two screws that hold the shiny metal box on the firewall (the fan speed controller) behind the glove box and I bet you will find a rusted transistor casing. This is an extremely common problem - the other symptom of this is frequently a fan that will only work on high speed.

I've got the same problem. Later on, EA2BA is bringing a new fan speed controller over, and we'll put it in. It'll cost $15. At the same time, we're putting in EBII Climate Control and Trip Computer.
