Targeting the hours closer to the times has its pros and cons. I think they made a blanket set of time to account for those kids (more so in high school) who do before and after school activities. However I can tell you we have kids in our playground well before 8:00am because parents have to go to work early and we don't have a before school care program.

The worst offenders at our school are the bloody parents of the children. Also the ones who call out to their kids from their car to run across the road.

Well i am going to beg to differ. I pick my kids up from school and we have a lane way that runs parrallel to the road and we get to watch the police on the side of the road catching the idiots roaring past the school. And i can tell you right now that a lot of them are in their "done up" cars, too low to see over the steering wheel with their caps turned backwards, and their exhaust a little too loud.

LOL...at my school those are the kinds of parents we have...or big brothers and sisters.

They need to have a permanent speed camera in the school zone in the suburb of Upwey Victoria.

NO ONE obey's the school zone speed limit there

And about 50% of the speeders are the the D1CKHEAD PARENTS dropping their kids off at the school

How do I know they are speeding? Because I am not and they are overtaking me.

cant believe someone else feels same as me, i was about to type near word for word when i read this reply..i look under bus as i come up behind them to see if any legs are walking around front of bus as you can see easily from most cars.
also i hate watching idiots speeding around corners in local streets,i usually step to the gutter when i see this in my street and stare at them and point at their face through windscreen and yell to slow the effin hell down,
works every time as i see them act like lambs next time going up my street.

Not everything is black and white. Let me give you an example.

About 3 months back my missus was coming up to a school zone.

She was driving along, cop runs out and pulls her over.

He says and i quote " What time is it? "

My missus looks at the clock in the car and says " 2:28pm " .

He walks away and writes a ticket out.

Comes back and says " My watch said 2:32 pm, you were doing 58 in a 40 zone".

You think my missus should lose her license for life? A technicality? Which if we took it to court would probably have gotten off?

I am a parent, and believe in slower speed limits for school zones. I have no problem with it.

People need to relax a little.

40 is fine for school zones and noone deserves to lose thier license FOREVER for making a mistake.

Speed isnt always the problem. It gets BLAMED alot because there is seemingly no other reason for an accident.

The problem is INATTENTION!

Anyone wanna put my theory to the test?

Go and do 160 kph down the highway after drinking a can of V.

Then, do 80 on that same highway, spill a hot coffee on your lap, reply to that sms and change lanes without signalling.

Lets see when the accident occurs.

How many bumper to bumper prangs are there in cities? Places where there is simply no room to speed? Whats the cause?

There has got to be middle ground
Yes speed gets blamed way too often by scientists that couldn't work out the real problem and polititians that want to make a buck by fear mongering

However there is also valid reason to have speed limits, especially in school zones. The reality is if a kid steps out on the road and the car coming at him is only doing 40 they might be able to drop anchor and avoid an accident all together, or at least minimize the damage.
Same driver doing 80 and the kids a gonner.

I support the idea put forward earlier that all school zone signs should have flashing lights.

Right on about that one Dr Hemi, when I take my daughter to school the driving antics of some parents is amazing.
