Default Why did this happen to me???

I dont believe it...sometimes I wonder why I bother and who I ИИИИed off in a previous life. I popped out to take a photo of the surge tank setup for another thread and when I pulled the tarp off- this is what I saw.

The tarp was put on yesterday and is black on one side, silver on the other.

I put it on silverside down as opposed to how I had it before and it has eaten right through the clear and the colour...

More work but WHY WHY would this happen??? : :

Havent the slightest idea where that tarp came from...was in the shed. It certainly isnt due to spilt chemicals (paint thinners, etc) because every part of the tarp that contacted the paint, this happened.

The car paint is acrylic with acrylic clear. Anyone have any ideas?

The only upside is that the turret stripes were a bit squiffy, so I'll get them redone. Still not happy....... :

Heres a close up of the damage.

Those particular tarps usually have a coating put on them to help waterproof them, so maybe there has been a reaction between that and your paint.

Bugger.

Funny thing was that it wasnt hot today.....it has been under the standard blue tarp woth no probs at all in much higher heats....I'll try to find out the maker of this tarp.

I'll not be using acrylic paint again, that s for sure.

I can tell you exactly what has happened. What you had was like a baking oven, and what you have done is to literally cook the bottom of the tarp to the paint. That is one of the drawbacks of acrylic paint. Sorry to see it happen to you little buddy.

Holy ИИИИ!

So it is a chemical reaction and not just the bottom of the tarp stuck to the top of the paint? As in not just surface crap? Thats ИИИИhouse luck mate.

So it'll need a complete respray?

Umm, no vinyl roof with clearcoat!! some other areas on the car (front wing) have minor damage that I'll be able to sand out but the turrets stuffed.

Hard way to find out that you shouldn't use a tarp to cover you car.Not only could this happen but they also leave tiny scratches over the car as well. Invest in a good car cover.

Heres the reason why-

The car hasnt been blocked back for the next clear yet so wasnt too concerned about the scratching.

I had to get the car out of the Garage who are doing the work (on the cheap) as they needed the space and my mechanic was on hols for a couple of weeks anyway. So, I had to keep it at my girlfriends parents house (where I also live!) but its in wahroonga and an unfinished, un registered old car gets all the wrong kind of attention........

But yes, A new car cover will be purchased asap :

Moisture and the heat did that. Basically steaming the finish.

Thats why I would never cover my cars with a tarp. Luckily my dad was a removalist in a previous life and has tons of bush blankets lying around. I use those instead.

I'll give it a shot with the sand paper but its gone quite deep... the only blessing is that I hadnt yet blocked her back, so depending on how thick the clear is...maybe I'll get away with it.

Of all the stupid things!
