Interesting. So it is only in Aus where Ford doesn't perform well.

there's nothing wrong with the Euro Fords. IMO they suffer here from an image problem, compounded by the fact that we don't get the good spec ones that they do in the UK.

This situation is unique to Australia. It stems from decades of people building up Holden's image while in parallel trashing anything that was a threat to Holden - namely Ford.

Petrol is ungodly expensive in the UK, most of their cars are smaller-engined versions of cars we have here. My uncle has a Hyundai Getz, it's got a really small engine though, 1.2 or 1.4 litre. Doesn't really make much of a difference, the roads are so crowded you don't really need more than the first two gears

And very different perception on what is needed size wise... A Golf is a family car over there.

Last week we had an old work friend from Scotland drop in to say hi while on their first Australian holiday and he fell in love with my little white Beemer.

Parked in the garage next to it was the XY and he asked what it was and how many litres the engine was.

When I said 5.8 he kept saying to his wife that car over there is 5.8 litres what a monster.

I didn’t want to give him a heart attack and show him what was in the other garage.

Ford is well respected in the UK (and much of Europe) for delivering decent cars.
Focus, Fiesta and Mondeo are considered the benchmarks for their respective categories.

Ford (along with Skoda) generally make the best quality and most reliable cars of all the European-manufactured brands. They have a very good reputation there. It's a pity we don't get all the European-model Fords from Europe rather than Thailand.

Meanwhile, at Ford HQ:

"See, Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo are selling up a storm in the UK. Let's send them all off to Oz and make them the sole passenger car options, because they will sell up a storm there too. What could possibly go wrong?"

Only problem here is, you're wrong.

1) all those cars are global cars so UK, Europe, Asia, US, NZ and AU get them. If AU was LHD compliant I am sure there would be more we'd get.

2) They're not the only passenger vehicles available, Everest, Kuga, Mustang and soon to be Edge.

Yes I am aware they are globally imported platforms and have been here for a while

Mondeo - imported in 1990s, failed
Taurus - imported in 1990s, failed
Fiesta - dominates overseas, very low sales here
Focus - dominates model sales globally, very low sales here, sales crash from 2013 on
Mondeo - new model but sales not igniting, very low sales level

Sold through an extensive dealer network

For SUVs, for sure, going well. Passenger (low level) vehicles is what I'm referring to. Their sales here should be a lot better. There's always an excuse and it's sure to follow...

i'm hoping UK will change to LHD, thereby prompting Aus to follow as well.

We also have Ford Australia and the well respected and liked Ford Dealer Network in Australia, who will do a first class job of supporting our cars and winning over the punters.

"They all do that"

"That is the way they are supposed to be"

"Nah, mate they don't make the XR8 anymore, you should be getting yourself into a Mondeo"

Top selling cars are a lot like top selling hamburgers, Big Mac, Whopper, Quarter Pounders...

Sure they sell, but these cars are the "built to a budget" hamburgers of the auto world. Big Macs do serve a purpose but living off them day after day does not improve your life, likewise for these "top selling cars".

We'll I have to totally disagree with that analogy as I currently own a fiesta Eco sports and a Focus ST and find them very nice to drive. My only complaint is what to trade the ST on next year, a Mustang, Focus RS or the XR6T Sprint.
As for comparing a Ford to a Big Mac same on you as that's just wrong now go and wash your mouth.

average age of cars in the UK rose to 7.7 years.similar to that of Sydney/melb CBD. due to the recession it rose and is now falling.

average age in Australia was 10.1.
average age in US is 11.5.

their are around 200 holdens listed as road licenced--most have small capacity engines. there are 9 000 short wheel base ser 3 landrovers listed.
and similar number listed as not in use.

I'm surprised the Corsa is so high. Some sort of discounting going on, perhaps?

OK, looks like some people are missing the point of 'top selling'. It doesn't necessarily have to be the best cars out there, just what is selling the most to the masses.

Since when was a Fiesta the only choice to tow a caravan?

Also because we are losing Falcon and Commodore which suit the task ideally.
